In an effort to add a little levity to the seriousness of testing week we did a reading/writing innovation lesson that I got from Cristie Fultz over at Ms. Fultz's Corner. I started by reading the book My Teacher's Secret Life by Stephen Krensky.
Then they brainstormed about what MY secret life might be, and created circle maps to include any ideas they had. Then they created a flow map to create their "secret life" story. They drafted, peer conferenced, revised and edited their stories coming up with these priceless ideas...
I have one of my students illustrating the cover to make a class book. I got such a kick out of reading their stories, everything from my being a secret ninja, rock star, famous author, biker, and of course "just" a teacher and mom.

This was such a fun project! I can't wait to do another innovation!
What great reading innovations do you have to share?

Very cute blog! I am follower #70. I am definately going to have to get this book and modify the writing for kindergarten but I would love to see what they think my secret life is like...they are always shocked to see me at the grocery store or anywhere outside my school.
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard Kelly! I used to teach kinder a long time ago. Almost any reading/writing innovation can be adapted to almost any level. Have fun with it. I would love to see what your kiddos come up with.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you teach?

Do you have expamples of your circle maps and flows maps, so that I can see the students thinking. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSounds great! What was the grade level you used this with? I teach 5th grade and can totally envision this assignment being a hit!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the freebies!
